It may be convenient to microwave your food, but there are 3 things you may need to watch out for when it comes to using this home appliance!

In recent years, instant food is popular because you just need to pop them into a microwave and “DING♪”...it’s ready to serve within minutes. 🤤

It’s a love-hate relationship with the microwave, do you know why? Every time I want to heat up the food, I have to confirm again and again before really putting it in…"Ah! Can this be microwaved?” You get the frustration now? 😂😂

Let's read on to find out more on 3 key points to take note before using the microwave!💔

1. What food cannot be microwaved?

① Food with shell or membrane (e.g. eggs)

It is likely to explode if you cook an egg in the microwave. The home appliance operates at a high temperature and tiny pockets of water form throughout as an egg cooks inside its shell. As the yolk heats up, the water pockets will do the same and cause pressure within. Once the shell cracks...BOOM! It’s a very ‘egg-citing’ explosion and we urge you not to try it. 🙈

On the other hand, we also don’t recommend microwaving eggs without the shell as there is still a layer of membrane coated on it. The heat and steam may cause a break in the egg yolk and cause it to splatter! The best way is to beat up the egg and add water to make it into a steamed egg.

 ② Raw or Half-Cooked meat

Do you know why? ⚠️The main problem is that microwaves heat up unevenly, which leave cold spots in the food and harbor dangerous bacteria. Imagine consuming those bacteria down your tummy?🤒 Avoid this as it may lead to health issues.🤒

③ Liquid

You should only boil water in the microwave in approved containers. Do not use plastic or glass unless it’s rated safe for microwave use. Do note that metal should never be put in the microwave! Microwaved water and other liquids do not always bubble when they reach the boiling point. They get super heated and not bubble at all and may result in sudden ‘blew up’. This is caused by a phenomenon known as super heating.🔥

Fruits

It is never a good idea to put fruits in the microwave. I mean, fruits aren’t usually eaten warm?🤔 There are rumors on using a microwave to make dried fruit slices. However, not all fruits can be made into dried slices with a microwave! Fruits with rich water content such as Grapes may explode and raisins send off so much plasma that they can ruin your microwave. However, there is an exception, which is the Apple! Cut the apple into slices and microwave them for 2-3 minutes...Volaaaaa!🍎

 ⑤ Hot Peppers

Peppers can explode when heated too quickly in the microwave—and they can even catch fire! The capsaicin, or the active ingredient in making peppers spicy, vaporizes when exposed to microwaves and these may burn your eyes and skin the moment you open the microwave door.🌶️ *In a case when your microwave catches fire, please remember to pull out the electric plug first before extinguishing the fire!*

 Nothing at all

Powering up your microwave without placing anything inside is definitely a way to ruin your appliance or entire house. In fact, it can blow up like a sudden explosion! It is bad for the microwave to not have anything inside to absorb the waves and they bounce off each other within the appliance, causing it to blow off! 🆘

2. What types of containers are NOT microwave-safe?

① Metallic Container

The inside walls of the microwave are made of metal. It traps the ‘microwaves’ inside the appliance, in order to heat up the food. If you place more metal objects into the microwave, the ‘microwaves’ hit the metal, free electrons on the metallic surface end up moving from side to side very rapidly. This, in turn, prevents the electric wave from entering the metal, and the waves end up being reflected instead. As they are reflected instead of being absorbed, it may result in arcing inside the microwave and cause electrical sparks. This is very dangerous to your safety as well as destroying the home appliance itself.

② Sealed Container

Placing a sealed container in the microwave is like placing a bomb on it. Microwave makes the water molecules bounce against each other, creating heat and steam...the steam must then be released. An unopened jar of pasta sauce, for example, would get hot, generate steam, and would eventually blow up, spraying broken glasses and pasta sauce throughout the oven cavity, and likely blow the door open.💨

Plastic Bags/Containers

When heated, the BPA and Phthalates in plastics can leach into your food. The plastic material may also deform during the heating process. However, there are plenty of plastic containers that have been made safe to be used in a microwave, please check whether it has been labeled as ‘Microwave-safe’ before use.

3. How do I clean a microwave?

When’s the last time you did a check on the condition of your microwave? Open it up! You may see some stains and think that they aren’t really a big deal, but this home appliance is holding odors and with food particles splattered all over...result in growth of bacteria. Using it over and over again to heat up your food, may have a negative impact on your health and hygiene. 🤒

According to an experiment done by a TV reality show, they said that the amount of bacteria in unclean microwaves is higher than water pipelines!
